Come for a walk with us around Beeman Camp, Campbell Island.

Swampy Crompton:

Mark (Swamps) Crompton, legendary remote island weather observer, has spent more time on New Zealand's remote weather bases than any other person. He was last on Campbell Island as part of the Campbell Island Bicentenary Expedition, Dec 2010 to Feb 2011. During that time, he went on a base walk-about and took a series of short video clips, capturing life on the now-deserted weather base. I put these clips into a movie.

To get a feel for what the base was like when it was being operated as a manned weather station, I've injected some still shots into Swamps' video footage. These photos were taken when I was living on the island in the 1980s.

Nature is taking over nowadays and reclaiming the island quickly. I took some photos of the base when I visited again in February 2023, and some of these have been slotted into the movie, too. Check out Swamps' movie below.
