Hey there,

Let's talk about one of the tracks from my album "Life in the Sub-Antarctic Campbell Island - The Weather Station Years" that really captures the essence of life on this remote island: "Wild Weather."

So, imagine this: you're stationed on Campbell Island in the 1980s as a Meteorological Officer. The winds are howling, the snow is swirling, and the rain is relentless. But amidst all this chaos, you've got a job to do – reporting back to base in Wellington, come rain or shine, day or night.

That's the story we wanted to tell with "Wild Weather." I wanted to convey the mood of those constant wild elements while highlighting the resilience of those who faced them daily.

So, I set about writing a song with a dark, moody vibe and a slow rock feel. I stuck to just two chords – D and G – throughout the song, keeping it raw and real.

Keeping It Real:

Now, here's the cool part: we didn't just rely on music to tell the story. We added authentic sound effects from the era.  Peter had recordings from back in the day of static and radio sounds that we could use.

The crackle of a radio transmission? That static at the start of the song? That's from a radio transceiver used to send weather messages from Campbell Island to Wellington back in the day. And those coded weather messages you hear in the background? They're snippets of real weather reports, of the type transmitted across the radio waves in the 1980s.

"Wild Weather" isn't just a song—it's a journey. It takes you right into the heart of Campbell Island's wild, untamed landscape. It reminds you of the challenges but also the beauty of life in such a remote and rugged place.

So, if you haven't already, give "Wild Weather" a listen.

Stay tuned for more stories behind the songs from our album.

Thanks - enjoy,
