Trapped by the Ice
Hello everyone,
I am excited to share the 5th instalment of our Shackleton Music series, "Trapped by the Ice."
Timeline
Where are we on the Shackleton historical timeline?
It's January 1915, and Shackleton and his men work tirelessly to find a way through the ice. They can see Coats Land; it remains tantalisingly out of reach. The cold grips the ship with relentless force, and it gets to the point where Shackleton and the crew use picks and saws in a desperate bid to carve a path through the ice.
The lyrics capture their futile effort:
“With picks in hand, we hack at the frozen sea / A labour in vain - there’s no way to break free.”
This track ends with the famous Shackleton quote.
"We are now a Winter Station."
The Music:
This track marks a turning point in the series where things take a darker turn. So, I aimed for a moody shift to reflect the growing tension and despair.
While experimenting with my Roli Seaboard, I discovered a haunting combination of chords and epic string sound that became the backbone of this song. Adapting to the very slow tempo was a challenge, especially with the vocal at such a slow tempo and the pauses that added extra drama to the piece. It all builds to the ending, where the Telecaster adds a unique flavour, spicing up the overall sound.

Trapped in the Ice:
Lyrics:
January's breath
It grips the hull so tight
The dogs fight for footing
In the endless light
Trapped by the ice
Caught in the freeze
It's getting colder and the wind numbs the sea
With Coates Land in sight the
Ice stretches far and wide
We're drifting away
Under the frozen sky
Bound by the ice
Caught in the freeze
All hope is lost
Surrender to the sea
With picks in hand
We hack at the frozen sea
A labour in vain-
There's no way to break free
Trapped by the ice
Caught in the freeze
We're now a winter station
We are frozen in the sea
Frozen, frozen, frozen in the sea
Frozen, frozen, frozen in the sea
Frozen in the sea
We're now a winter station
We are frozen in the sea
